The 10 Best Samsung Phones for 2022

Here are the best Samsung phones for different needs.

There could be a stir in our list of the best Samsung phones, currently dominated by the Samsung Galaxy S21 releases from spring. Samsung usually rolls out two flagship phones a year: one in the first half and one in the second half. Now that we are in July, the launch of a Samsung phone looms in the summer.

But Samsung could mix things up this year. Instead of a new Galaxy Note phablet (phone+tablet), as has been the case in recent years, the phone maker is reportedly targeting new versions of its foldable phones. Whatever Samsung is up to, the new entries will challenge first place among the best Samsung phones – not to mention the best phones in general.

Even so, the phones Samsung has available right now are still pretty formidable. Finding the best Samsung phone of the bunch is a matter of figuring out what kind of phone you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to pay. Chances are, Samsung has a phone with the features you’re looking for at the price you’re looking for. These are our choices.

What are the best Samsung phones?

The Galaxy S21 Ultra, which hit the market earlier this year, is Samsung’s ultimate smartphone right now. The Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus are both impressive phones in their own right, with dynamic displays, fast processors, and lower price tags compared to last year’s S20 models. They just as well deserve a place in the debate about the best Samsung phone.

There are still cheaper options, especially with the launch of the Galaxy A52 5G. Last year’s Galaxy S20 FE also remains a popular option to get flagship features at a lower price, although a new version could be coming before the end of the year.

  • What are the best android phones?

As for Samsung’s foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has emerged as the best foldable phone money can buy, although it’s quite expensive, even after a price cut of around €170. Most importantly, as we mentioned, there is said a successor on the way, so unless you need a new phone now, wait another month or two to see what Samsung has in store for its foldable lineup.

Still a great Samsung phone with an S Pen included

Screen size: 6.9 inches | Android version: 10 with One UI 2.5 | Processor: Snapdragon 865 Plus (US)/Exynos 990 (WW) | Cameras: 108 MP, 12 MP, 12 MP and laser autofocus sensor (rear); 10MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 12GB/128, 512GB

It’s about a year old now and it’s been knocked out of place as the best Samsung phone by the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Still, the Galaxy Note 20 remains a great choice for phablet fans, given all the benefits Samsung has introduced in this model.

One of the most eye-catching features of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra remains the phone’s dynamic refresh rate, which automatically adjusts based on what you’re using the phone for. There are also other productivity-oriented features: the S Pen is more responsive than ever, with a delay reduced to 9ms. Samsung’s DeX feature works wirelessly with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The phone is also powered by the Snapdragon 865 Plus, which is still an excellent chipset even after the arrival of the Snapdragon 888.

The Note 20 Ultra’s hefty camera bump takes some getting used to and people who don’t want to pay in the four digits for a smartphone will want to look elsewhere. But the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra delivers one of the most versatile big phone experiences of all Samsung phones. And it’s very possible that a new Galaxy Note won’t ship this year, making the Note 20 Ultra the best phablet you can get in the near future.

Reasons to buy

  • Stunning Dynamic 120Hz Display
  • Smoother performance from the S Pen
  • Powerful camera with 50x zoom

Reasons to avoid it

  • The big camera bump on the back
  • Duration

3. Samsung Galaxy S21

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

Samsung’s a cheaper flagship phone

Screen size: 6.2 inches | Android version: 11 with One UI 3 | Processor: Snapdragon 888 (US)/Exynos 2100 (WW) | Cameras: 12 MP main, 12 MP ultra-wide angle, 64 MP telephoto (rear); 10MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 8GB/128, 256GB

The price for the Galaxy S21 is good, the cheapest of Samsung’s new flagships. At around €675, the starting price of the Galaxy S21 is around €170 less than what Samsung charged for the Galaxy S20 last year. That price is also good compared to Apple’s iPhone 12.

In some ways, the feature set reflects that lower price, as Samsung has used plastic for the S21’s body and omitted a microSD card. You also have to deal with a 6.2-inch screen with a reduced resolution. But that screen also has a dynamic refresh rate, which adjusts the rate at which the screen refreshes based on the task at hand. And the Galaxy S21 has the same Snapdragon 888 chipset that gives the S21 Ultra the best performance for an Android phone.

Add excellent cameras that outperform comparable models from Apple and Google and you’ve got a great phone for a less astronomical price.

Reasons to buy

  • Excellent Dynamic 120Hz Display
  • Powerful Performance
  • Excellent telephoto lens

Reasons to avoid it

  • No charger or card slot for microSD
  • plastic back

4. Samsung Galaxy Note 20

A great flagship phone for under €1000

Screen size: 6.9 inches | Android version: 10 with One UI 2.5 | Processor: Snapdragon 865 Plus (US)/Exynos 990 (WW) | Cameras: 12MP, 12MP, 64MP and laser autofocus sensor (rear); 10MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 12GB/8, 128GB

As good as the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and Galaxy S21 Ultra are, both phones cost over $850. The Galaxy Note 20 costs around $850 and you don’t have to compromise too much for a still powerful phablet to save hundreds of dollars.

The Galaxy Note 20’s 6.7-inch screen skips the faster refresh rates of those more expensive phones and instead of a glass back you get a plastic one. Neither sacrifice is too great, though, especially if it means getting a phone with cameras that perform as well as the Note 20’s triple lenses. You also get the S Pen – the secret weapon of the Galaxy Note range – and all the note-taking improvements that come with the Note 20 Ultra.

Add excellent performance from a Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset – the same as that in the more expensive Note 20 Ultra – and you’ll be impressed with all the value Samsung has put into the Galaxy Note 20 at around €850. However, it just beats the Galaxy S21 Plus for a place on this list and that’s only because of the S Pen. If you want a phone for around €850 with the latest specs and a glass back, be sure to check out the S21 Plus.

Reasons to buy

  • Excellent cameras
  • Excellent performance
  • Attractive design

Reasons to avoid it

  • No fast refresh rate
  • Battery life is moderate

5. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

Best value for a Samsung phone

Screen size: 6.5 inch| Android version: 10 with One UI 2.5 | Processor: Snapdragon 865 | Cameras: 12MP, 12MP and 8MP (rear); 32MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 6GB/128GB

You may have been impressed by the various Galaxy S20 models that debuted in 2020, but were put off by the fact that they cost $850 or more. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE can alleviate that shock by packing many of the best features into the S20, but for around £250 less. It compares well with a number of phones, including Apple’s latest models, as we experienced in our Samsung Galaxy S20 FE versus iPhone 12 face-off.

This $600 phone runs on a powerful Snapdragon 865 system-on-chip with 5G connectivity. The 6.5-inch OLED screen has a super-fast 120Hz refresh rate that provides smoother scrolling. And while the 8MP telephoto lens isn’t quite as sharp as the 64MP lens on the S20, we’re still impressed with the Space Zoom feature.

You’ll have to make some compromises with the Galaxy S20 FE – the phone has a plastic casing and the included charger isn’t that fast – but this is a great phone for those who want premium features at a reasonable price. At around £85 less than the Galaxy S21, it’s still good value, unless you must have the Snapdragon 888. Keep in mind that there are rumors of a Galaxy S21 FE circulating, meaning Samsung could roll out a replacement for the S20 FE before the year is up.

Reasons to buy

  • Affordable price
  • Large 120Hz screen
  • Good presentation

Reasons to avoid it

  • Battery life could be better
  • Does not come with a fast charger

6. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

The best Samsung phone that can be folded

Screen size: 7.6 inch (main), 6.2 inch (cover) | Android version: 10 with One UI 2.5 | Processor: Snapdragon 865 Plus | Cameras: 12MP, 12MP and 12MP (rear); 10MP/10MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 8GB/256GB

Samsung has clearly learned from the missteps with the original Galaxy Fold and created a much more thoughtfully designed foldable model with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. And while we appreciate the larger screens – both the bezel and inner panel are larger than before – as well as the reinforced hinge, what really makes the new Fold stand out is its role as a productivity booster.

The reinforced hinge brings the same Flex mode that Samsung introduced to the Fold series with the Galaxy Z Flip, allowing you to split your screen into different functions. Three-app multitasking returns, and you can now link apps together to launch at the same time. Other apps have been redesigned to take advantage of the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s full screen, essentially turning your phone into a tablet.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a much better buy now that Samsung has permanently slashed the price from about €170 to around €1500. Still, that’s a lot to pay for a smartphone, even one that has three cameras on the back and a Snapdragon 865 Plus processor offers. Samsung is reportedly working on a successor, the Galaxy Z Fold 3, which, according to some rumors, could arrive in August. Until that phone arrives, however, the Fold 2 is the best foldable device in Samsung’s range.

Reasons to buy

  • Large cover display
  • Flex Mode Support
  • Improved multitasking

Reasons to avoid it

  • Very expensive
  • No water resistance

7. Samsung Galaxy A52 5G

Affordable 5G from Samsung

Screen size: 6.5 inch| Android version: 11 with One UI 3 | Processor: Snapdragon 750G | Cameras: 64MP, 12MP, 5MP and 5MP (rear); 32MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 6GB/128GB

Samsung’s mid-range phone range is currently led by the Galaxy A52 5G. (At least that’s the case in the US, where the Galaxy A72 5G won’t ship.) Despite a lower price tag than the Galaxy S series, you’ll find many of the key features these phones highlight. Samsung has a 6.5-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, although there is no dynamic adjustment for the Galaxy A52 5G’s display.

The main 64MP lens takes some pretty compelling shots, even if the other cameras on the phone (a 12MP lens plus dedicated macro and depth sensors) can’t keep up with the photos produced by top camera phones in this price range. . You’ll appreciate the A52 5G’s Snapdragon 750G chipset, good battery life and the fact that a phone charger comes with the phone.

If you’re looking for a Samsung phone that costs less than €430, the Galaxy A52 5G is a pretty solid choice, although the price of the Galaxy A42 and A32 is even lower. (Check out how these phones stack up in our Galaxy A52 5G vs. Galaxy A42 5G vs. Galaxy A32 5G comparison.)

Reasons to buy

  • 120Hz screen
  • Versatile main camera

Reasons to avoid it

  • Inconsistent performance from other cameras
  • Display scratches easily

8. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

A smart flip-phone design

Screen size: 6.7 inches| Android version: 10 with One UI 2 | Processor: Snapdragon 855 Plus | Cameras: Dual 12 MP (rear); 10MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 8GB/256GB

With the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, we finally have a foldable phone that can hold its own with other devices. Like the Motorola Razr, Samsung has taken the flip phones of yesteryear for inspiration, but unlike Motorola’s flawed device, the Galaxy Z Flip feels solid and well-built. Appreciation for the layer of Ultra-Thin Glass that Samsung uses on the phone’s 6.7-inch interior display and the overall quality of the phone’s hinge.

Folding the device into something that fits neatly in a pocket isn’t just a cosmetic gimmick. Samsung has come up with a way to make the most of the foldability of the Galaxy Z Flip, with a Flex model that divides activity between the top and bottom half of the screen. The Galaxy Z Flip also supports multitasking with many apps, allowing you to run two apps at once.

The Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset powering the phone delivers strong performance, although more recent phones are faster (including Samsung’s own Galaxy S21 models). The dual cameras on the back of the Galaxy Z Flip produce photos that are almost as good as the best camera phones, although we still prefer the iPhone 12 Pro or the Pixel 5 when it comes to taking photos. For that reason, it’s hard to recommend this foldable phone over cheaper, more capable flagship devices. But the Galaxy Z Flip proves that a foldable phone can really deliver what it promises and that’s a big step forward.

You have two choices with the Galaxy Z Flip: an LTE version or a 5G version. Aside from their mobile connectivity, they are essentially the same phone, although the Galaxy Z Flip 5G costs less than the original model. (In fact, it’s the same price as the Galaxy S21 Ultra at around $1000.) We’d recommend the 5G version over the more expensive standard Flip, though you could also wait for the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 3, which will launch at the same time as the Galaxy Z. Fold 3 will arrive.

Reasons to buy

  • Ultradian glass adds durability
  • Compact design when folded
  • Good performance and cameras

Reasons to avoid it

  • Poor battery life
  • Still expensive compared to other phones

9. Samsung Galaxy A71 5G

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

Last year’s phone is still solid

Screen size: 6.7 inches| Android version: 10 with One UI 2 | Processor: Snapdragon 765 | Cameras: 64 MP, 12 MP, 5 MP depth and 5 MP macro (rear); 32MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 8GB/128GB

You may have forgotten the year-old Samsung Galaxy A71 5G, especially since Samsung launched the Galaxy A72, which promises newer hardware even if it doesn’t have 5G connectivity. But the A72 isn’t going to the US — it’s too similar to the Galaxy S20 FE, Samsung concluded. That means the A71 5G is still an option in this country, especially as the price has dropped from its original cost of around €500 and it remains available from both carriers and retailers.

The Galaxy A71’s launch price was already quite low for a 5G phone, so anything under €500 is even better value. That’s especially true when you consider that the A71 5G offers good battery life, decent performance, and – most importantly – connectivity to all kinds of 5G networks. You’ll also appreciate the large 6.7-inch OLED display, reinforcing the idea that you have big screen options beyond the expensive Galaxy Note series.

Reasons to buy

  • Good battery life
  • Good presentation
  • Price has fallen

Reasons to avoid it

  • Mediocre cameras
  • Hardware from last year

10. Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

Another big-screen option from Samsung

Screen size: 6.7 inches | Android version: 11 with One UI 3 | Processor: Snapdragon 888 (US)/Exynos 2100 (WW) | Cameras: 12 MP main, 12 MP ultra-wide angle, 64 MP telephoto (rear); 10MP (front) | RAM/Storage: 8GB/128, 512GB

There’s not much that sets the Galaxy S21 Plus apart from the Galaxy S21, although the previous phone offers a bigger screen, bigger battery, and a more polished design than the cheaper S21. Whether that’s worth the extra $170 depends on how you feel about extra screen space, as the S21 Plus lasted about as long as the S21 in our battery test, even with a larger battery.

If you opt for the Galaxy S21 Plus, you get a great phablet, especially when it comes to the 6.7-inch OLED panel. That’s because the Plus’s screen, like other members of the S21 family, has a dynamic refresh rate that adjusts based on what you’re doing with the phone. (It matches the S21’s 48-120 Hz range.) The cameras are also excellent, especially the Galaxy S21 Plus’ telephoto lens, which has a 3x optical zoom and a 30x digital zoom.

Fans of big phones won’t mind how bulky the Galaxy S21 Plus can be. They will simply be happy with a solidly designed phone that gives them the display they ask for.

Reasons to buy

  • Beautiful 120Hz AMOLED display
  • Outstanding performance
  • Insane zoom function

Reasons to avoid it

  • Bulky and unmanageable
  • No microSD slot or included charger

How to choose the best Samsung phones

Choosing which Samsung phone you want to buy is mainly determined by budget considerations. For example, you’re not going to jump for a Galaxy S21 Ultra if you’re not willing to put down at least $1000, even if you choose to stagger those payments. But other factors must also be taken into account.

Start with how you use your smartphone. If it’s primarily a productivity device, then you might want to focus on the Galaxy Note range, especially for the powerful S Pen that comes with Samsung’s big-screen phone. If you use your phone for photography, the Galaxy S series is usually first in line for Samsung’s camera innovations.

Budget-minded buyers will consider the now-released $425 Galaxy A52 5G and other models in the mid-range Galaxy A series. You can also find discounts on Samsung phones by buying directly from the phone manufacturer and trading in your current device. Check out the best Samsung phone deals for the latest savings.

Keep in mind that there are always new Samsung phones around the corner. We expect a successor to the Galaxy Z Flip sometime this year. As for Samsung’s other foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is also said to be in the works, possibly replacing the Galaxy Note range later this year. The status of the Galaxy Note 21 remains up in the air.

How do we test Samsung phones?

CHECK CURRENT PRICE

To find the best Samsung phones, we test the company’s phones the same way we test every smartphone we review. We run benchmarks on every phone, including synthetic benchmarks like Geekbench 5 and 3DMark to measure graphics performance. That allows us to compare the Samsung device with other phones, including Apple’s iPhone. In addition, we use real-world tests, including a video transcoding test with Adobe Premiere Rush.

In our lab, we measure the brightness of the phone’s display (in nits), as well as how colorful each screen is (using the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamut). In these cases, higher numbers are better. We also measure the color accuracy of each panel with a Delta-E rating, where lower numbers are better and the score 0 is perfect.

To determine how long the battery of a Samsung phone will last, we have the phones continuously surf the internet via LTE with their screens set to 150 nits brightness. The average smartphone lasts for 10 hours, with the best battery life of up to 11 hours or more in our tests.

Our camera tests included taking photos with every Samsung phone we review and comparing them to similar photos from similar models. We shoot landscapes, food, portraits, and more, and also let you judge for yourself with side-by-side comparisons in our reviews.
